The NanoTextSurf project aims at creating unique material properties and next generation products with surface treatments and coatings containing nanocelluloses. Nanocelluloses are plant or usually wood-based nanomaterials that have particles sizes in nanometer scale.

The nanotextured surfaces are created on textile, paper, and plastic webs with various application techniques. After the treatment, the web has properties such as antifouling, pollutant capturing, improved strength and enhanced abrasion resistance.

These innovations have the potential to boost European industry’s competitiveness. However, more procedures and technologies for the manufacturing of nanomaterials must be developed.

Main objectives

  • Demonstrate the viability of nanostructured surfaces in biobased applications, both existing and new. Membranes, textile fabrics and linings, friction pads, and abrasive materials are among the applications.
  • Upgrade the SutCo pilot line to allow for the production of biobased nanotextured and nanocoated products on a commercial scale.

How is Tekstina contributing to the project?

Tekstina is one of 13 partners in the EU project NanoTextSurf, with the responsibility for demonstration trials on textiles. So far, we have done demonstration trials on our technical flame-retardant fabrics with nanocelluloses to achieve unique material properties. With the nanotextured surface we created breathable textiles that are thinner with excellent moisture management properties.
